1846 LC, 1898 V, 2 wheats & Caught in a T Storm!
Quote this message in a reply
Hi folks!

Had to call off the crew today as it was T Storm booming at their show up time and radar didn't look good. Stuck around and did some mechanical maintenance until the weather let up and went off to some woods that aren't off limits where I've had some pretty good finds. Got the 1940 wheat first off, bunches of headstamps and bullets, the 1898 V Nickel 2nd a ways away and on the way out, after getting drenched in a pretty good lightening T storm, took a detour through another section of woods I've really never had any luck in whatsoever. About 1/2 hour in got a great signal, digital between 87 and 92 and somewhat medium in volume but solid high tone. Running the Tornado with the AT Pro in Pro Zero, one notch down in sensitivity, wide open on discrimination, ground balanced and Iron Audio "On" , (because there's a lot of mineralization and that helps.) This was kinda down a slight slope and it's been raining for about a week on and off, and I found what was big and round at about 7 inches down in the clay under pines under the water filling up the hole. So I rinsed it in the mucky dirt water and saw the prominent One Cent on the back right away. From there I put it in my pocket and left it as is until I could get it cleaned a little at home and hit it with some Olive Oil. 1846 Large Cent! Then about 10 feet away, in a run off stream I was crossing, I get this hit of a solid 77 to 79. Dig a nice plug in the water and pop the whole thing out into a drier area. At the bottom of the plug, about 5 inches, out pops a 1918 wheat. Now I've been through that area about a half dozen times in dry weather and found absolutely nothing! With all the machines! So it goes to show you that even though you can hit an area numerous times it doesn't mean that nothing is really there. I was quite surprised and delighted with the LC turning up. The V as well but it's really toasted! Surprisingly the 1918 wheat is in better shape than the 1940!!!!

Have FUN out there guys and gals and HAPPY HUNTING!

And remember, lightening only kills you once and you won't even know it so just keep swinging! And lightening does register on the AT Pro!

What a nice batch of finds. Love the old coppers , Largies seem kind of rare up my way , maybe I just haven't put the coil in the right spots , only 3 found in my career including one that had been modified to have an interesting misspelling on the back.
Thanks for sharing with us and be careful around that lightning , we would miss your stories if it did only kill you once. I may fire up the AT pro just to see how it reads the lightning now.

Congratulations on the Large cent! 1846 that's old! LC is on my bucket list, and doubt I will ever find one. Old wheaties and v nickel are a bonus too. I have heard lighting crackle in my machines too. The large metal scoop I'm toting, ensure a good connection. Yikes!!

You be careful out there! And if in doubt ask for forgiveness. Lol!

Thanks guys!

I would have gone back to the truck during the storm but I was about a 30 minute walk away through some pretty tough woods and running would have been too dangerous, so I said let's just keep swinging. My Deb said I should have taken shelter under a big tree! I asked her how well that went for Arnold Palmer!!!! LOL! I don't think the boss upstairs wants me just yet.

I don't know what it is about LC's and me but I seem to find 2 or 3 a year. I mean, I just can't pass up those big signals! And I've dug enough cans and mason jar lids that it's just silly to pass up. Don't worry though, because after about 4 to 5 hours of tromping around in the woods I'm simply too tired and sore to actually dig them at times. I have my limits. (Tylenol wore off!) I don't see anyone else swinging so tomorrow can be another day!

ODF  I see that you're still killing it. Congrats.

I have 3 best friends. Their names are Ace 350 , AT Pro ,  and a Fisher F 75 but I like people too.

Nice work in the woods again Ed. The large cent was a good reward for a hard day's work. I admire the way you, MRH, Medic and a couple of others here tackle the difficult sites and plug away for hours at a time. Hope 2017 will be kind to you.

Nice old score/s there Ed Yes

Your soil sure is tough on coins. Is it heavily fertilized or something??

Thanks MRH!

You bet it's fertilized! It's called Acid Rain! Between your car making up there and our machine parts, paint and steel making over here, we're lucky the trees are still alive let alone corroded coins!
