Any ideas??
Quote this message in a reply
I found this yesterday while hunting with Joe NJNYDIGGER at a park I haven't been to in about 20 years. It's sterling silver and the corrosion seems to be iron. I have an idea as to what it is but would appreciate opinions. Thanks, Gerry

i honestly have no idea. sure is an interesting little piece.
my only thought based on shape would have been possibly
a fancy pen cap from a silver pen .
whatever it is, nice find, i like the ones that are tough to ID
makes the game more interesting ....

Gerry, I'm strongly leaning towards a cigarette holder. And whoever owned it had some big bucks Yes

That is a PHENOMENAL piece! I say give it an electrolysis bath to take off the rust & spruce up that beauty Happy

NjNyDigger, you are likely right,
just kinda throws me off with that square hole near the cigarette end.
kinda made me think a clip hooked to that location of a cap.
does the object appear to have a hole on the other small end
it looks closed on the end from the pics.

my second guess would be an old vintage silver needle case...

Hey now, that's looking quite right. I was wondering the same thing as you, Bones, in reference to the end of the piece. If it's open, it would be a cigarette holder...but why the triangle opening? I think Gerry is going to give it an electrolysis bath, so we may inspect the end a bit closer.

That needle case just might be right...

I've been looking at this photo series and thinking about it for a couple of days. I thought pen, as in nibbed pen, as you may have as well, cap piece. And I thought cigarette holder as well, but the seemingly punched opening threw me off. Now a needle case, that would make more sense BONES. The reasoning behind that would be the punched opening, which if V'd to the interior, would ease access to only one or two needles at a time instead of them all spilling out at once. And the part that puts the whole picture together would be the missing cap of the needle case. I think the bath will give us more detail and a better grasp of where to research.

I could see that it might be a cigarette holder.  The square hole could be where the handle was attached to hold the holder.

The last photo gives me the impression it is closed on the end, which would rule out cigarette holder. I don't know what it is, but I wish I had found it, thats a really amazing piece.. Love it!

You might want to check with a local museum or historian, they are often good resources. If you are lucky enough to have an archaeologist near by they are usually very helpful. Please keep us informed when you do identify it, I would love to hear what it is.
