I thought maybe Telegraph/pole related from way back but I dunno Think

just my thought based on the shape of the tip.
i would guess some kind of gear shift handle maybe for a large tractor
or other heavy equipment ...

It looks to be solid. Maybe the handle off of something.Can you tell what the ball on the end is made of ? Looks like it maybe lead. What about it makes you think telegraphic? More info on the area it was found also maybe helpful (farm/field, woods old house foundation etc)

It was found in a farm field

the top ball thing is hollow

don't think it's lead - it's not heavy/solid enough and has a "tingy" sound when tapped - 

the iron part is shaped like a square nail "timber spike" type thing and gets thicker (tapers) from the bottom to the top where the ball is

the field is along a major 2 lane road that's been in use for 150+ yrs or more
