Find of a Lifetime!

I don't know whether to envy this guy, or feel sorry for him, as it's going to pretty tough for him to ever beat what he found...after only 18 months in the hobby. Unreal. If this doesn't get your heart pumping, you're in the wrong hobby Yes

My gosh, what a story that is!  I had to read it several times and ogle the pictures to try and get a sense of just how big that find is. Every MDer's dream and it came true for this young man. Goes to show that no matter how much you prep and learn, no matter how much you spend, Lady Luck is still a big player in this hobby.  It would be great if you can find something similar on your next visit Steveo ;  you've already had spectacular success across the pond. Good luck.

What a pretty ring and to have found it that early in his time detecting is awesome , but I agree with Joe where do you go from there?
In that area it sure would be fun to try to top it. I would venture to say if he was unsure if detecting was for him before that now he is hooked.
Thanks for sharing such a great story.

That's a fabulous find of Antiquity!! I'm sure that when any of us finds a vintage ring from the late 19th or early 20th century we feel pretty much the same, but this guy found something that I don't think he'll ever be able to match. Few if any of our finds go up for auction to museums. I just hope he uses the poundage well and that he keeps endeavoring to find stuff. A mindblowing find for sure!

I must've read this story about 10 times, it really is spectacular. And good for the finder, I'm glad he's going to see a nice payday. If I were the lucky soul who dug that, I would probably sell it, as well. $85,000 can be of more value for me than the ring can by sitting somewhere on a shelf. But still, I'd HATE to part with it.

As Shade said, and he hit the nail on the head IMO, one can have the best location, the best equipment, the best knowledge, etc., but that fickle thing called "luck" matters too. A LOT of this hobby goes that way. If 2 guys of the same experience are hunting the same spot with equal technology, many times, the difference between a banner day and an okay day will be who turns right & who turns left. After all of the big money spent on machinery and the countless hours learning, it oftentimes turns into a game of random luck...who's coil goes over the prize first.

Wow, that is a beautiful find joe!
James's isn't quite as old though. The maker(hallmark) was 1803-1804. Middle stone is missing and side stones are rubies I'd imagine. Nice chunker too. Some nice marks on it as well.
Will have to get a pic up for you all.
