Max depth
Quote this message in a reply
Hi,

I'd like to ask a question about the Bounty Hunter IV metal detector. I may have missed it, but I didn't find any information on how deep it can detect coins or any metal. Does anyoneknow?

I remember reading an article where a guy found some silver coins 5-9 inches deep. Is this a typical depth or can it detect stuff deeper?

Thanks

All detectors (regardless of price) will detect metals...that's what they're supposed to do, lol. However...

You get what you pay for in this hobby. Unless its one of the higher-end Bounty Hunters, I think the depths you mentioned are a bit unrealistic. Adding to the situation, a LOT has to do with the soil type where you hunt, the depth of the items you're searching for, etc., etc., etc.

In general (not true in every case detector wise, but most), the more $ you spend the more depth & adjustability the detector will offer. More depth & adjustability = more finds Wink

As a beginner unit to get your feet wet, you should be fine, but, for more advanced hunting with finding deeper items, I'd go back to the drawing board Idea

I'd say the max depth of that detector would be 4"-6" depending on size of the target.

I think that 6" is stretching it a bit for that detector, but why don't you test it. Check an area to make sure you get no readings then lay a desired coin there and move your coil over it at various heights. This will give you a general idea of your pickup distances.
Now as far as dollars for depth on a detector, you can get around this by buying a top of the line older detector. Some will equal the depth of new detectors at a fraction of the cost. My 12 year old Whites XLT will match the depth of newer general purpose detectors. I have picked up a license tag at 2' with it. And have found many rings and coins with it also. Check the classifieds here.  Frank...
PS: The XLT pulled this Ruby/Gold ring out of an old back yard.
