My favorite and oldest button . Came from one of our older parks here in SoCal .
(Civil War Era circa 1850 - 1870 ) Federal General Service Button , Horstman & Allien , NY.
And this silver jewelry box lid I dug from an old lot . It was next to a huge oak tree about 8 inches down and when it came out of the ground it was black and smashed up . Thought it was a peice of scrap metal untill I noticed the engraved initials in the center of it . Took it home worked on it with a rubber malet and some needle nose pliers and got it back close to what it probably looked like and then polished it . Thanks for looking !

HH
Mike

Nice stuff Mike.

I like the old military buttons. I have a few of that back mark as well. Very coo!!

Good work on the silver lid. Love the old engraving. True craftsmanship back in the day probably took hours to engrave!! Now they just throw it on a computer engraver and it is done in a minute or two.

Thanks for sharing

Old hotel room key tag . HOTEL ROSSLYN 644 LOS ANGELES CAL. IF CARRIED AWAY RETURN UNSEALED BY MAIL POSTAGE 3 CENTS .

This was dug from a down town park minutes away from where the hotel still stands today . Was hunting with a couple buds Dan & John when I recovered this and it was completely bent over when it came out of the ground . The crack is from when I tried to straighten . It's been cleaned in this pick I no longer have the pic of before the cleaning .

The hotel was built by the Hart Brothers in 1913 . A lot of history & info on the hotel if you do a Google .
Thanks ,
HH
Mike

That is a sweeeeeeet key tag, Mike!!! I'd be doing cartwheels all the way home after digging that. Curious...

I'm guessing it came out of the ground with a green patina (like an Indian head) & had rust, if so, how did you get it restored (especially the color), electrolysis? The color looks like a golden brown. That is just awesome!

P.S. - I'm gonna play 644 in our Pick Three lotto tomorrow...ya never know Big Grin

Thanks guys for the previous compliments !
Joe the hotel room key tag was a crusty brownish / black / green and almost completely unrecognizable or readable . I would have left it with it's original dug patina but was hard to tell what the writing was on it because of the very dark color .

In this case I felt I had nothing to loose .The results of what you see for cleaning is a salt and vinegar bath and a light brass brushing . I would not recomend using this cleaning technique unless last resorts . It will strip your finds very good but will also take away natural patina .
Thanks ,
HH
Mike

Those are all awesome finds everyone has posted! Joe, you are right about the large cents being pretty toasted out here in the east. Here are two that I found you can hardly see liberty on the head dress. The pics are not the best they look a little better in person but not much.
