Dirt won't hurt ya. I wear glove to protect me from glass and any other sharp items that might be down there, but I'm not worried about dirt. I've been gardening for years with no ill effects, so dig on and don't give it a second thought.
I can see concern today with all the chemicals used in farm fields and yards as opposed to when I was a kid we were so poor dirt was all we could afford to play with! Rolled many a marble across the dirt then picked them up and licked them to clean them! When I play golf a few times a year several of us wash our golf balls when possible due to the herbicides and pesticides used on the course.
