I found this today. I think it's a chain from a pocket watch. It's very dirty, but where the metal shines through it looks like gold to me. Does old dirty gold look like this?
I've pulled crystalline gold nuggets out that assayed over 23k (94%) that was in the dirt for 130 million years and it was as shiney as a pimps gold front tooth--was does that tell you.
I suppose if it it had been dipped in something that would allow dirt to stick it could look like that but my guess is it's just the last of the gold plating that's getting your hopes up
Probably plated and some of the plating still shines.

Yes I agree gold will be shiny no matter what it was plated and some is still left on that why spots are shiny. Still a very nice find
