A brass handle on one end going through a piece of iron with a two pronged fan blade on the other end, appears to be used for stirring something.

Any guesses?

Odd one ... does appear to be some kind of mixing device.
it`s amazing in our day of computers and world accessible
knowledge databases that we still dig up stuff from not that far back
and say ....  what the hell is that ... i think you got one of them .... 


another thought ...  could have been part of a hand held meat grinder, 
or mixer for mixing tougher or thicker mixes .
the handle to the side may have given more pulling / pushing leverage
to grind or mix tougher things.  just seems like a common mixer
would have the handle positioned for faster turning. that looks like
it was built for power not speed ... ... just a thunk ...

I should mention that the blades were never sharp, rather dull with rounded edges and a design on them, so could never cut anything just stir. I'm thinking a liquid... butter, paint, ice cream, etc.

Pretty Cool-- I would guess a vintage Jar butter churn.

They had a lid (your iron ) that would screw on to a jar and then you could churn the butter in the jar.

Google "Antique jar butter churn"  similar but yours has a different turning mechanism.
