dug up what appears to be a copper needle case, or lipstick tube ... there is something inside and, it has some weight to it.

No idea here either, interesting finding lipstick deep in the woods. 
i assumed needle case based on all the thimbles i have found just a few feet from the spot this was found ...

I love the thimbles as well, about 10 years ago i was lucky enough to get to detect the property of Mr Steven Bayard Wilson the 3rd.
Mr Wilson the 1st was the president and one of the founders of fram oil.
Mr Wilson the 3rd a billionaire from birth, i did a lot of work for the family.
detecting the property i pulled up a sterling silver necklace thimble holder containing a 14k thimble inside ...
