We got back out again today.  Was hot, sweaty, and diggin iron all day.  I did find an X and an O and have no idea what they are.  Also pictured is a square nail, one of the octagons I cleaned up a little, and the memorial Og lost last week.  It was in his diggin pants pocket the whole time.
cool finds,
the X and O appear to be stencils.
not sure why just the X and O but neat any way .

nice score on finding the memorial ... ... ... again   Happy
Here's the BIG IRON I dug today.  I got a mini Sampson shovel and was able to dig out things I would usually have given up on.  The huge spike was a foot if not more deep.  That's serious diggin.
love the iron ...
be nice to see them after an Ebath .

The X does seem like a stencil.  It's thin like sheet metal and appears to be copper.  It was bent up and 8" deep.  I actually measured that one with my pinpointer.  But the O looks like it's broken off of something.
wow ... i`m blind as a bat ... didn`t see the O there.
pretty neat. appears to be some kind of thick name plate
possibly off a front door or gate .
really cool find.
Will,

What you may have there is a timber spike used in building hewn lumber homes.

Exactly

my guess would be a mid 19th century cabin spike if I had to lay $$ on it ;-)

cool find!

The big spike I dug is about a foot long.  So it's much bigger than this one.

That's the one I was talking about!

Spikes a foot long or more were used in 1830s/40s/50s cabins to spike the timber/logs together especially at the foundation.

I'd hunt that area hard as there's bound to be some good finds to be had ;-)
