Not 100% sure, though, I believe they did, Will.

Wow. How did I miss that? I knew they discontinued the Soveriegn but not the Explorer.

Yep-- the best of all the (Pre CTX) FBS machines is discontinued--Go Figure!!
WTG Minelab !! Always listening to the customer!!
The Explorer has the best visual smart screen and audio ID of any machine I have ever used. So what did they do with the E-Trac and CTX?--CHANGE IT!!
If the CTX was set up like an Explorer with the bigger screen and options available it would have been incredible at even better ID!!
Just my two cents.

I can't agree with you more Ron. It's the same everywhere. Not knocking engineers, but they have to have something to do to make a new and improved tested and true model even BETTER!! So the products that worked in the past, and did the job well, just fade away and sometimes are the ones to stick with.
Gotta cut this short, I want to get a space in line for the new iPhone 6.

As a USER, it sucks. From Minelab's perspective (and I'd agree), it's a brilliant move, as most people will only have two expensive options to choose from on ML's high end - the Etrac & the CTX. Why give someone the chance to pick a cheaper model in the Explorers?! Surprised they haven't done away with the Safari yet.
I truly think the CTX would sell a LOT better if they priced it in the $1,400 to $1,500 price range, as $2,000+ for most of us HOBBYISTS is simply an unjustifiable stretch.

But the reality is they are introducing a beginners high end machine. Oh goody, I need GPS tracking in case I forgot where I was. (What, are we all retired with 2 million in investments?) Ron has a point. If they would use the smart screen/VID used on the Explorers in the CTX they maybe would have a better, more deducible machine. We all wait to see where it goes with them. And the idea of a machine compatible with the price range of an E-Trac, well, that would be incredible to say the least Joe. Those two configurations would put XP Deus on the back burner, and, not denying the capabilities of the XP, would put ML on the forefront of technology with FBS.
IMHO.
