Well, I've never used either one, but, from all I've seen over the years, both are finicky, complicated machines to set-up properly and get the most from. So, if you've figured out the DFX, I don't see why you should have a problem with the V3i. Keep in mind though...
The V3i is SERIOUS business. An endless amount of filters, settings, programs, etc. If you enjoy fiddling with things, playing with settings, and all that jazz, it might be for you. If on the other hand, you're like most, and you simply want to hit a few buttons and start hunting, I'm not sure the V3i would be a good choice. Almost everyone I knew that used the V3i got rid of it. Not because it was a bad unit, it wasn't at all. The problem was it was a BITCH to set-up. Of course...
There might be some pre-set programs you can use, but, IMO, it wouldn't pay to drop that kinda coin on a machine simply to use the pre-sets. Also, pre-set stock programs normally deliver sub-par performance.

Or, consider the V3, which is a simpler, stripped down, turn-on-and-go version of the V3i.

I like the idea of being able to adjust the settings, and the polar plot feature seems like it may make the difference from digging so much trash, the v3 doesn't have this feature. Not sure I'm going to be able trade for it, he may not like the guns i have to trade, but I don't game hunt anymore so it's sounds like something that could work.

I had the VX3, and it is almost like the V3i. It has some good pre set, and you can ajust them like you want. It is a little cheaper than the V3i, and with just few less ajustments.

I looked into a v3 but the polar plot feature on the v3i seems to be very useful. Ran into a guy using a v3i earlier this year asked him about this feature we put a pull tab, a nickel, and a gold ring down and you could tell the difference using the polar plot.I don't search for gold only but I do dig some low tones in hopes of gold this may take some of the guess out of what the target may be before digging. I don't have a lot of time to detect with work and honey do's always in the way so any feature that helps cut digging trash targets is welcome.

Well I like the V3i and the VX3 here in Wisconsin the v3i is too hot as far as I know you have to tune it down some. The VX3 is a lot more set machine for here but like you said there are some stuff you do not have from one to the other. There is a pretty good learning curve but well worth it

I would love to have that learning curve problem, but haven't been able to fund the purchase yet. I may sell my 2 Honda Goldwings just not a good time of year for that.
