Hey I can't believe this one - they were digging at a VFW Post in South west Jersey because they wanted to put in a Handicap ramp and found a cannon!
Now they have to determine if it was left behind by Hessian's or it is from WWI?

Cool!! Bet that was a surprise for the contractor too!!! Call before you dig ya know!! Bet he thought he had hit an old cast iron gas or water line. He was probably shaking in his boots until they dug it out by hand. Very interesting find!!

ODF
ODF\Ed, for sure - he was probably so worried he crapped in his pants. It is NJ and they love to fine folks for not getting the right permits or causing problems like breaking water mains.
HOLY CRAP!!! That's one of the best stories I've ever heard! Wonder how deep it was?

Joe
Nice find. I'm still wondering if I should've continued to dig further on some big metal.
Hello Joe, great question - I had to read about ten different articles to get this information

A contractor excavating for an elevator and ramp for handicapped access to Memorial Hall found the cannon barrel about 4½ feet below the surface on the west side of the brick building.

Here is a link to that article.
