Kinda following on from the
MD laws thread, but have any of you guys had any bad experiences when you've been detecting - for example, people hassling/threatening you or whatever?
A guy at work told me a story the other day about a friend of his that went detecting with a couple of his buddies in some woods once and there were shall we say "unsavoury characters" nearby, one of them could be seen waving a gun around so they left that area pretty quickly! I don't know much about the circumstances but I think they called the cops about it, they were that worried!
luckily i've not been caught out like that (yet)...

I've been stopped a few times by overzealous cops, but, after asking a me few questions & seeing I meant no harm, I was able to go about my business of hunting. Of course, I've had to deal with rowdy kids before, nosy onlookers & that type of stuff, but, thankfully nothing serious.
I used to hunt Stockton, Ca a lot. If you don't know Stockton, its one big ghetto loaded with history. Had many interesting encounters there, including a crazy hooker who bent over and started slapping her big butt at me, and I almost stabbed a guy with my Lesche once. Oh , and had an illegal grab a blower out of my truck and take off running. Needless to say, my wife hates me detecting that city, lol.

Kinda funny you mention that D.R.! I've pulled some nice stuff from parks that were in the questionable part of town (how come the best coins always come from the worst areas? Lol). As a general rule, get to these places at sun-up & leave by 9 or 10. P.S. - Thought we had the market cornered on crazy here, in NJ. Glad to see you got it out there, too :P Joe

Yep, I always hit the ghettos EARLY...that hooker deal was about 5am. Usually only the bums, junkies and hookers out then...the gangbangers like their beauty sleep, lol.
So question for you experienced guys. How do permits work? I personally enjoy fishing and know that I need both a state (yearly renewal) and daily fishing permit to be legally allowed to fish. Does treasure hunting require any type of certifications/permits?

Some places have them.personally I'm a fed up redneck that doesn't believe in that...my taxes are my permit.

Good answer, D.R., lol. Cutler, being a bit new to the hobby, you wouldn't know this, but, metal detecting seems to be on the offensive these days; bans by towns & government entities, busybodies hawking you while you hunt thinking you are planning god only knows what in their minds, etc., etc., etc. Make no mistake, this hobby is under attack, in certain respects. Lets not even get into the Archeologists :P
So, we as people simply enjoying a harmless, entertaining past time, believe we have every right to detect public land, as we're doing no harm to anyone.
As long as one respects the hobby & the land; filling in holes, disposing of trash, etc., we have as much of a right to practice this hobby where we see fit, as does a bicyclist or someone flying a kite in a park
Of course, there ARE obvious exceptions; private property, cemeteries, historical sites, etc., but, outside of these venues, why should anyone care where we practice this hobby if it's doing no harm to a person or thing?! Last I checked, this was a FREE country
This is a free country!!!! So what do you do when someone hassles you though? Do you leave, do you fight with them? Are you a big guy, do you just intimidate them?? :P
