I have longtime been stumped by rocks in the ground... I am talking ones twice the size of your fist and larger. I get a good sound, dig the rock out, and still get a sound in the hole. Have dug myself silly. Don't have a pro pointer yet and wonder if it's just a ground balance problem once the huge hole is there....? Any advise??
What detector are you using? Is it a clear, definable signal, or a broad ground noise type. Does the rock give a signal?
