In 1944, Maurie Isenberg manned a radar station on a remote Australian island, spending his free time fishing on the beach. One day he found a stash of coins and put them in a tin, promptly forgetting about them for decades. He rediscovered them in 1979, when a museum identified 4 as being from the Dutch East India Company and five as being copper coins from the Kilwa sultanate, dating from between 1000 AD and 1500. Isenberg finally drew a map of the beach, and a professor will soon be exploring the beach in partnership with the Aboriginal custodians of the islands. Interestingly, local legends tell of a secret stash of coins and weapons in a cave somewhere on the islands. I can only imagine that anyone with a metal detector in the area is making a beeline for the islands!

Yes, lots of buried treasure out there Wink Supposedly, there's more money buried in the earth than there is currently in circulation. Kind of hard to believe/fathom, but, who am I to argue. Now if only I can find some of it :P

Really? Where did you hear that? Considering before banks existed people used to bury their money to keep it safe, it was likely true at least at one time. Not sure about today, though!

Just something that's common knowledge within the detecting community. I agree with you, it sounds absurd (and it may very well be), but, regardless of what the exact number might be, there is SURELY a LOT of buried loot out there Wink
