A question for the more experienced metal detectors out there who can advise some newbies!

Apart from a metal detector and a spade/trowel what other gear or tools would you recommended that every treasure hunter should take with them into the field!

Did any specific tool come in very handy at a  certain dig?
Do you not leave the house without ensuring you have your favourite side tool?

Let me know
Andy.

I always have a probe, pin-pointer, trowel, sand scoop and bag to carry out the junk and to hold all my tools in my vehicle with me. as I also like to hit the beach whenever the opportunity presents it self.
I recommend some gloves..and a decent pair at that. Cut the top of one of my fingers once on some broken glass in a hole. Luckily it healed up correctly and stuff, but gloves can definitely keep your hands safe

I agree! Although pricey, PUGGS & Mechanix makes some terrific ones Yes Harbor Freight always has great deals, too. I generally use the nitrile palmed gloves, as I've found them superior. The plain cloth or canvas type work gloves are okay to use once or twice, but, they don't form fit your hands, they're terrible in wet/moist soil, and look like a dinosaur barfed on them after a few hours.

The are the tools I have when detecting.

  • A good digger, Lesche, Predator depending on the turf type
  • A pair of pruning shears for cutting shrub and tree roots
  • A jewelers loop for look at dates on coins
  • An inline probe on the detector and a Pistol Probe for depth
  • A bottle of water for washing the dirt off a coin so I don't screw it up rubbing with my fingers and for drinking when I get thirsty.
  • An assisted opening folding knife for numerous uses
  • An SOG Power Assist Multi-Tool on my belt.
  • Knee Pads - keeps my jean clean and my knees safe
  • Cell phone in airplane mode
  • Small ground cloth for spoils in lawn areas.

  • Spare car and house keys in my other pants pocket
