General purpose Scoop like the one above works well but, like all scoops, when the basket is full of sand, with a long handle it may be too heavy to lift to sift the sand out.
But a wire basket like this is superb in dry sand.
You almost always have to slide the lift hand down the handle closer to the basket to lift it. The bigger and heavier the scoop, the harder it becomes.
This is a smaller scoop I designed for myself and for my wife. I works great when water hunting. Smaller holes in the back to catch the very small stuff.

He has made strength changes to the handle mount to prevent any flex as I suggested after having the first three made. I had some metal rods welded on my originals.
He also now uses the larger holes through-out the entire basket. Handles dry sand sifting better. He has named it the Ontario Scoop, since I designed it to be used in the Great Lakes. Ontario is the Province of Canada I reside.

This is an ideal handle, I have custom bent for my height. Takes less effort when water hunting due to the angle of attack plus you can slide your hand down to the bend for easier lifting and clearing the scoop water hunting.

You want something sturdy for the shells and rocks and or iron items on a beach. I like stainless steel they hold up well.
Mine has a wooden handle not metal and it works fine. I bought the scoop online (from Europe) and the handle at a local hardware store.

I have three Aluminum Sand Scoops for sale. "Super Light" won't drag your arm off and will save your back, enjoy hours of hunting. Sand sifts out fast so items are recovered quickly, has two strong magnets in the bottom (in case of bobby pens or small items), Handle attaches with two u-bolts, for easy travel.
I am a hunter myself and for a good while I had studied the prefect shovel lay out. I have fabricated five total, one is my prototype which I've used for over three years, In the water, wet sand and dry sand (with no problem) and I love hunting in the water. The second one I made was for whoever when hunting with me. Well, a fellow detectorists that came to buy a detector I had for sale, after letting him use my extra scoop to check out the detector, he bought them both,(the detector and the Scoop both), So I made three more. Not trying to get rich. If you've ever built any of these you know the materials, equipment, lay-out, add it all up am not making any money.
Measurements are 11 5/8"long x 7" wide x 5"high, It's made for a Wooden shovel handle that can be purchased Home Depot, You will love this shovel. Don't forget Spring Break is coming fast! 150. each and shipping

I made my own. Took a scoop and some thin wall conduit, bicycle handle bar grips and a couple of u-bolts. I bent an offset on the end, and slid the bike grips on with soapy water.

This is what I use, has an adjustable long handled
