No, just makes a dunk sound, then the Minelab song plays, then shuts off.

So that explains why you do it. If you are out in the field detecting and the machine shuts off you can't continue to retrieve that target. That's not good, you have no time to finish your last dig.
Mine will last about five minutes or so before shutdown which is plenty of time to complete a recovery.
So it's not you - it's how the machine works. I probably would do something similar to what you do in case of the situation I stated.
That was a good question Joe and what I think to be a good answer Dusty. Funny thing is, I just went through my original batteries that came with my first MD(2 weeks old.) And I did the same thing as you Joe, had 1 bar left and I put in some new ones. You're not alone!
