This link comes courtesy of Sven Treasure Linx. It includes terrific, detailed instructions on how to purchase a kit and build your own PI beach detector...for around $60 or $70!!!

I don't build the Surf's. The Surfmaster PI is the easiest beginner PI detector to build. Performance is identical to White's Surfmaster.
Good thing about it you really don't need a oscilloscope to calibrate it.
The website posted above, is not mine but, of another's who has some good info about building it. So I suggested it as a site to visit.
You are basically building the White's Original Surfmaster PI. White's considered the design obsolete and graciously released the schematics thru Carl Moreland who put it on to the Geotech Forum for those to build or experiment with. Carl is the owner of the Geotech Forum.
I do offer PCB and parts kits now and then to build my Mirage PI. Or a complete kit so to speak. Since I get requests all the time. But, they are not really a good first timer project unless you have the necessary equipment and pay attention to what you are doing.
Anyone interested in building their own PI?
Namely the Crossbow Classic PI, its a deep machine period.
Mostly for coin, larger gold and silver jewelry, relic hoard machine.
Was not designed to find small gold or small gold nuggets, not a prospecting PI.
Designed by George Overton based on Carl Morelands Hammerhead PI platform. Co-authors of the book Inside the Metal Detector.
12 Cossbow units were originally custom built by George.
Google Crossbow Classic PI for more info.
I was personally given the PCB and schematics from George to build this machine. A few of us took on this project and the first has been built and working.
A few more guys want to build the Crossbow, so I am doing a one time batch order for some more PCB's. If anyone else is interested, you must prepay and deadline to order is March 15th.
Current PCB's are Rev.C 2015 thanks to George, that fixes a solder trace error of Rev B 2011.
PCB's $13.00 each
Shipping up to 4 PCB's in one packet:
To USA $8.50 Europe $11.00
US FUNDS, Paypal Gift Option
I do have a sub-forum set up for us building the Crossbow, that covers the build with all build info and we're posting a step by step build guide.
