As usual with such old relics, I only give them a light scrubbing with a bronze brush then dry. Often the rust actually helps with the structural integrity of the find--If the oxidation process is halted or slowed then they can be displayed. I never use lacquer or polish on these items as they may rust underneath the protective layer which is very hard to detect (especially if in a display case!).
Actually I haven't even experimented with electrolysis........BUT I plan to in the near future (probably on an old horseshoe or something less "valuable").
